The Gear
Because I was in Death Valley during December, I planned more for cold weather than for warm. However, as I never left the valley floor, contrary to my plan, I had more cold weather gear than I really needed. I did not cook dinner, but did bring a stove and pot for making hot tea in the evenings and the mornings. Because nights are long in the winter, I brought a few extra things, like batteries and an extra large book and journal. Everything added up to a higher than normal base weight, but still very manageable.
